The relationship between theater companies and Hollywood has always struck me as a bit unfair. Hollywood basically gets its pick of pre-packaged products: wonderful lyrics, showstopping dance numbers, and beloved songs. Theater companies, meanwhile, have to do most of the heavy lifting when adapting a movie for the stage. Oh, you want to make Waitress into a musical? That’s great! You’ll just need to write a whole new suite of songs. And figure out all the choreography. And rewrite the book to make those first two things fit. Because the movie has none of that.

So it makes a lot more sense  —  at least to me  —  when stage producers target a movie that already includes musical numbers and fantastic choreography. Enter Moulin Rouge!. A few days ago, Variety (via /Film) announced that production company Global Creatures was preparing to turn the popular Baz Luhrmann musical into its very own stage show. According to the article, Global Creatures has hired John Logan to adapt the screenplay for the stage and Alex Timbers to direct. A similar piece in Playbill shows that the full title of the show will be Moulin Rogue! The Musical, because of course.

Both Logan and Timbers are interesting choices to bring this movie to the stage. Logan has already proven himself to be medium agnostic, writing equally for television shows like Penny Dreadful, movies like Skyfall, and stage shows in his native Chicago. Meanwhile, Timbers is the writer and co-executive producer of Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle and the director of the critically beloved stage show Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.

As part of the news, Luhrmann released the following statement (via Playbill) praising the talent involved with the project:

I first encountered Alex Timbers through the remarkable and inventive production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and the brilliance of Here Lies Love. I immediately recognized the young director’s creative spirit and felt we shared similar sensibilities and instincts. So I’m tremendously happy to celebrate that Moulin Rouge! will be under his direction and that the book will be the creation of the gifted Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan whose writing I also admire deeply. It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm.

No release date or city has been set for the show as of yet, but I’m going to venture a crazy guess here and say when the show is ready to go, you will hear about it.
