The shift in who controls the land was made as a means to secure the border between the state of New Mexico and the country of Mexico.

A 60 foot wide zone that runs along the US - Mexico border in the land of enchantment is now considered to be a part of Fort Huachuca in Arizona and under military control.

The military cannot operate as domestic law enforcement but does have that authority when it comes to military land. This mans military troops now have the right to search, detain and/or arrest anyone ... meaning, obviously and mostly, illegal immigrants ... caught trespassing on this land along the border.

The Roosevelt Reservation ceded about 170 miles of land alongside the US border to Fort Huachuca. The presence of US military troops along the border started ramping up in 2018 under then POTUS Trump and continued throughout Biden's term with the National Guard.

The Department of Interior last week transferred the land, known as the Roosevelt Reservation, to the Defense Department as directed by an executive order by President Donald Trump. The Interior Department and Department of Homeland Security were directed to cede jurisdiction to the military. - stripes.com

Since POTUS Trump ordered active duty troops to the border back in January of 2025, the number of migrant crossings has fallen from 5,100 per day during Biden's term to 230 per day over the last few months. Fiscal year 2024 saw over 121,500 Border Patrol encounters with migrants. Since last October, there have been about 30K.
