Marrying for money may sound so unromantic and kind of skeezy, but it happens more often than you might think! So much so that now you have to ask yourself if this is the new normal?

They say everything’s bigger in Texas and apparently, that includes the wedding budgets. A new study from SplitUp, a divorce-coaching app, ranked the U.S. states whose residents are most likely to marry for money. Florida and Nevada took the top two spots, but Texas proudly claimed third place, earning a “gold-digger score” of 8.23 out of 10. So, when it comes to love and luxury, Texas isn’t shy about saying “I do.”

Love Or Lifestyle?

The study analyzed each state’s millionaire population, cost of living, average income, and online dating behavior, including how often people searched for terms like “sugar daddy,” “sugar baby,” and “marry rich.”

According to dating experts, that mix of money and modern romance makes for some revealing results. Matchmaker Blaine Anderson explained that Florida and Nevada already have a more transactional dating culture noting that she’s had clients meet people who literally say, “I’m looking for someone who will cover rent,” on a first date.

Meanwhile, Texas, California, and New York round out the top five- all places where luxury lifestyles and visible wealth can blur the line between affection and ambition. That's at least according to dating coach Emyli Lovz, co-found of emlovz, who says that states like California and New York combine high concentrations of wealth with lifestyle-driven dating cultures, so love can start to look like a business partnership.

A Texas Marriage Story

Evidently, Texans know how to mix business and pleasure. From oil money to tech hubs, there’s no shortage of ambition (or high standards). But that doesn’t mean it’s all shallow dating pools and prenups!

Texas has both big hearts and big wallets- whether it’s a Hill Country ranch wedding, a Dallas power couple, or an El Paso romance built on tacos and trust funds. Sure, we ranked no. 3 for marrying rich, but that just means we understand the value of a strong foundation, and maybe a shared savings account!
