Netflix Looking at ‘Making A Murderer’ Season 2 Possibilities
The Netflix Making a Murderer train hasn’t slowed down one bit, each day bringing new updates and developments on the Steven Avery case from all sides, and Netflix may finally take heed. The streaming giant is considering their options for a second season, noting that “the story is still unfolding.”
Granted it took 10 years for filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos to assemble the 700 hours of footage culled together for Netflix’s 10-part series, we might yet see a second season at some point. Speaking at the TCA press tour, company creative head Ted Sarandos teased the possibility, as well as the current interest in true crime:
The story is still unfolding, so we’ll certainly take a look at it … It was a remarkable turn of events in the last couple weeks of the year. It was that crazy combination of super-addictive television and [people having the] time to watch it. So people were watching it and telling their friends, who also had time to watch it during the holiday break. People were just obsessed with it. There must be something genetic in us, that we’re natural born detectives. And there’s a sense of injustice and certainly a sense of mystery.
Sarandos also spoke to criticisms from former prosecutor Ken Kratz, who accused Making a Murderer of leaving out key evidence:
This show was 10 years in the making. There was 700 hours of footage. To split hairs about what was left in and what was left out … it was a great film and we want people to watch it and decide for themselves.
For those unfamiliar with the documentary, Making a Murderer follows the case of Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man convicted of a brutal assault and sent to prison for 18 years, only to be exonerated by DNA evidence. Soon enough into a public civil case for justice reform however, Steven found himself accused of the murder of young photographer Teresa Halbach, and subsequently railroaded through a lengthy trial under especially dubious circumstances, and apparent corruption at every turn.
Producers have also spoken to Avery in the weeks after release, recording the conversations with an eye toward including them in future episodes, but what should we hope for from Making a Murderer Season 2?
