Franklin hands Eastwood second straight loss, 44-27

By Adrian Broaddus

Franklin junior standout running back Ernie Powers rushed for 316 yards and totaled four touchdowns, as the Cougars held off Eastwood, 44-27, in a key 1-6A game on Friday. Complimentary back Atreyu DeLaRiva rushed for 107 yards and totaled a touchdown in the win for the Cougars as well.

Eastwood junior quarterback Andre Saenz made his first start of the season, completing 30-of-60 passes for 336 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Wideout Jude Walker tallied nine catches for 125 yards and scored two total touchdowns.

Franklin went into the half with the 23-17 lead. They broke away with a 30-17 advantage in the third quarter before Eastwood scored 10 unanswered and cut it to a three-point game, 30-27. Back-to-back late fourth quarter touchdowns helped Franklin distance themselves and eventually win the game, 44-27.

Up next, Eastwood (3-4) will face Pebble Hills, while Franklin (4-3) will host Socorro.

Del Valle QB Fette goes pass happy in win over Hanks, 71-0

By Steve Escajeda

Del Valle junior quarterback Jake Fette only played in the first half of the Conquistadores’ 71-0 annihilation of the Hanks Knights.

But one half of football was all he needed to complete 13 of his 15 throws for 322 yards and a jaw-dropping eight touchdown passes.

With the win, Del Valle remains undefeated at 6-0 on the season and 5-0 atop the District 1-5A (Div. 2) standings. Hanks fell to 2-2 in the district and 4-2 overall.

On Del Valle’s opening drive of the game, they drove 71 yards (on two Fette passes) and scored in 29 seconds. And the route was on.

Fette, who has already committed to Arizona State, now has 19 touchdown passes this season without a single interception.

Like Oprah Winfrey, Fette was throwing out TD passes to every receiver he could find; Josiah Nunez caught three scoring throws, Ryu Nunez and Johnathan Estrada each caught two, and Dylan Gonzalez and Dante Eytcheson caught one apiece.

Another story was Del Valle’s stellar defense, which held Hanks’ offense (which had been averaging 485 total yards a game) to just 47.

In six games, Del Valle’s defense is giving up just 7.8 points per game and has allowed their opponents a grand total of just seven touchdowns combined.

Next Friday, Del Valle will try to keep its winning ways going at Horizon (0-4 in district, 1-5 overall), while Hanks will try to regroup when it hosts El Paso High (1-3, 2-4).

Burges gallops over Horizon, 44-35

By Sebastian Perez-Navarro

Week 7 is a time in high school football when those fighting to reach the playoff surface either sink or swim. The want to keep postseason dreams alive was none more prominent than at Mustang Country, as Burges would win a tight matchup over the Horizon Scorpions 44-35 on Friday.

The Mustangs would take control early, as senior Luke Dexter-Quinn would carry three consecutive touchdowns to the house, giving Burges a 23-0 edge.

But there’s no stopping a scorpion. Horizon struggled all night in finishing off offensive drives, but in the third quarter sophomore quarterback Julian Williams connected with senior Sergio Santana on a 39-yard dime to get Horizon's first points on the board.

The Mustangs would score another touchdown, widening the gap 30-7.

Yet, when stopping the Scorpions initially and regaining possession, the snap would slip right through the legs of Burges junior quarterback Marcus Sanchez, and the Scorpions would pounce to take possession.

The turnover pinned Horizon at Burges’ 10, and it wouldn’t take long for Williams to find senior Jacob Olivo to cut the Mustang lead to 17.

Horizon wasn’t finished. The Scorpions would recover an onside kick attempt, which they converted into a 19-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Santana.

In response, the Mustangs would stampede through Horizon’s dreams… at least they thought, as Dexter-Quinn took a 39-yard carry to the endzone.

When kicking off to Horizon, senior Johsua Reazola patiently awaited the kick. Once Reazola’s hands were one with the ball, he’d carry Horizon back into the game by returning the kick for a 100-yard touchdown.

But in life, there are only three things certain. Death, taxes, and Luke Dexter-Quinn scoring touchdowns. The senior, this time with a 52-yard distance, put up a forty burger for the Mustangs.

Despite a late touchdown from Horizon, the Scorpions fell short of a comeback.

Luke Dexter-Quinn shined in Friday's barnburner. Dexter-Quinn crossed the 300-yard threshold and put up FIVE touchdown runs.

However, the Scorpions gained more than a loss, as Julian Williams’ potential was on full display. The sophomore threw for over 200 yards and four touchdown passes.

Horizon falls to 0-4 district-wise and awaits powerhouse Del Valle at home.

Whilst Burges improves to 2-3 in district and keeps their playoff hopes alive. Awaiting them is Andress, who’s third in 5A-2.
