An article from Only In Your State detailed some horrific tragedies but I've had my own research going. What I found are some of the most significant disasters that have unfolded in Texas.

Hurricane Harvey (2017)

I remember this one myself. Hurricane Harvey brought unbelievable amounts of rainfall that caused catastrophic flooding in Houston and surrounding areas. Literally, thousands of homes were damaged. The storm made a massive demand for emergency services and volunteers.

Texas City Disaster (1947)

An industrial accident that shook the town of Texas City, this explosion occurred in a ship loaded with ammonium nitrate fertilizer. The blast was massive, killing nearly 600 people and causing widespread destruction.

Galveston Hurricane (1900)

This hurricane is one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history. The storm surge engulfed Galveston Island, claiming around 8,000 lives. Thereafter, significant changes in disaster preparedness were made.

West Fertilizer Plant Explosion (2013)

In the town of West, a fertilizer plant explosion caused a massive fireball and leveled nearby buildings. Fifteen lives were lost, including some first responders. The incident led to better regulation of hazardous materials storage.

New London School Explosion (1937)

A tragedy that changed school safety forever, this natural gas leak caused an explosion that destroyed the New London school building. Over 295 students and teachers died, leading to gas safety practices.

Central Texas Floods (1921)

Massive rainfall led to excessive flooding in central Texas. It claimed more than 200 lives and caused a lot of property damage.
