The Meow Wolf Art Complex and House of Eternal Return is more commonly known as “Meow Wolf”. It’s part art exhibit/part funhouse and I can’t think of an easy way to describe it that comes close to doing justice to how cool it actually is. Suffice to say that I’m looking into how much it would cost to put a refrigerator into my house that is actually a portal to an alternate dimension. And I didn’t even take drugs!

Here are some of the takeaways from my first ever Meow Wolf experience.

  • 1.) It’s cheaper than a night bowling. We showed up without making any reservations on a Friday night. There was no line and I paid under $30 for two admissions and you’re allowed to spend as much time as you want to until close which was 10 pm.

  • 2.) There’s a story aspect to it but I didn’t try to figure it out. I was able to get from some of the context that there was a larger “narrative” that you could try to figure out if you were into that. I was content just wandering around looking at all the cool stuff. If I go back I might actually look for the clues and try to figure out the story.

  • 3.) Somebody did some hallucinogenic drugs somewhere along the way. I have never used psychoactive drugs, myself. But I’ve listened to enough Beatles and seen enough R. Crumb to know what psychedelia is all about. And that’s a big part of what’s going on here. Somehow, it’s also very wholesome and family-friendly, though.

  • 4.) I kept thinking “What a great place to…” and then fill in the blank. Some of the ideas I had were “…have the hide and seek world championships”, “have a paintball fight” and “base a doomsday cult out of.” Also, I couldn’t help thinking of the rich people orgy in “Eyes Wide Shut”. That’s not my scene but I can imagine there are a lot of rich freaky people who would pay through the nose to have an “Eyes Wide Shut” style party in Meow Wolf.
