New Mexico has had a long history with trains & television. In recent years we know the state as the "Breaking Bad" state. Another well know figure in television that has a history with New Mexico is the author of the Game of Thrones series, George R.R. Martin. You might not know this but one of the most historic railroads in New Mexico is actually owned BY the Game of Thrones author.

The Sky Railway in Santa Fe, New Mexico is owned by George R.R. Martin

Before it was called the Sky Railway, it was under an older name called the Santa Fe Southern Railroad. Going back to Breaking Bad, the railway was featured in Season 5 in the iconic train heist episode.

After the show, the railway nearly went bankrupt until Bill Banowsky & George R.R. Martin took ownership of the railway to save it from going under.

However they didn't want to just have a normal rail line; they decided they wanted to make these engines POP in the desert sun. You'll notice the trains come with these very creative paint jobs in white & purple showing off designs of a wolf & a dragon.

George was the head of the creative team saying "We need to be bold, wild, and exciting, with something different up our sleeve...No one else has a wolf or dragon. We do. I hope we come up with a howl and a roar worthy of them."

If you visit the railway today, you'll still see the trains with these beautiful paint jobs.

The Sky Railway is still going strong & people can take scenic train rides in the Santa Fe area, which you can see on their website.
