Where to Get Free Thanksgiving Turkey in El Paso
Thanksgiving is almost upon us. It is my eighth favorite holiday of the year (I’m boycotting Valentine’s and Columbus Day has a bad image problem these days).
With high grocery prices and many struggling to make ends meet, according to a recent article in the El Paso Times, El Paso families might have a hard time putting together a huge meal for the Giving of the Thanks.
Fortunately, there are several churches and NGOs that are providing Thanksgiving gratis for El Paso residents facing hard times.
The Salvation Army
The venerable organization is serving up free, drive-thru Thanksgiving meals for needy families. You just have to get a ticket ahead of time at the shelter at 4300 E. Paisano Drive.
El Paso Rescue Mission
Free holiday meals are served at 221 N. Lee Street from 11 am to 4 pm on Thanksgiving Day.
Sacred Heart Church
Also serving up meals with all the fixings at the church (602 s. Oregon).
Something worth noting…if you’re thinking about “volunteering” your family to serve meals at a shelter or soup kitchen, you might be more trouble than you’re worth. In 2017 the president of the National Philanthropic Trust urged people to pick literally “any other day” to volunteer. It turns out, SO many people volunteer on days like Thanksgiving and Christmas that service organizations are simply overwhelmed by the number of one-time-only volunteers. Volunteer on, I don’t know, March 11th. Nothing is going on that day!
Finally, the KLAQ Morning Show is giving away a complete Thanksgiving feast ($375 value) courtesy of Raiz Federal Credit Union. Turkey AND ham, as well as all the traditional sides, are prepared by Con Amore by Bere Catering. Call the MoSho Neckline, at 844-805-6325, and let us know how a Thanksgiving feast could really come in handy this year. It’s NOT a contest to see who has the saddest story, though. Times are tough for everybody so let’s not turn it into a contest (Disclaimer: Technically, this IS a contest).
