Scary. That is the best word to describe last night's collision between Jurickson Profar and C.J. Abrams of the San Diego Padres. First, here is video of the two Padres players going full speed into each other while tracking down a Tommy LeStella shallow fly ball in the top of the fifth inning.

In the replay, you can see how Profar takes a knee from Abrams directly in the side of his face. As he remained down on the ground and received medical attention, Profar was able to get to his feet and attempted to walk off the field. However, he collapsed to the ground shortly after he began walking.

This time, the Padres took no chances and immobilized the 29-year old while carting him off the field.

We found out today from the team that Profar is back home resting after suffering a concussion and cervical neck strain. Every baseball fan is rooting for him to have a safe recovery back to the diamond later this summer.

After a couple of disappointing seasons in San Diego, Profar had come alive in June with 15 RBIs. His 2.6 WAR (wins above replacement) is second on the team only behind Manny Machado.

The really interesting question is what do the Padres do to replace Profar while he recovers from the concussion and neck strain? Nomar Mazara moved over to left field from right after the collision, but Will Myers is still not expected to rejoin the club from the injured list until after the All Star break.

There are a pair of players in El Paso who could both be looked at as potential call ups. Brent Rooker makes the most sense since he plays left field like Profar and he has already been called up to the Padres twice last month. The 27-year old is also hitting .279 with 14 home runs and 43 RBIs this season with the Chihuahuas. Another name to consider is Esteury Ruiz, the 23-year old dynamo who has rocketed up the Padres Minor League system. If you combine his statistics from San Antonio and El Paso, Ruiz is hitting .337 with 14 home runs, 46 RBIs, and 57 stolen bases. I am sure the Padres are tempted to test Ruiz in the big leagues, but he came out of nowhere this season and he has only played 25 career games in Triple-A. San Diego might want him to get more experience before they feel comfortable calling him up, especially since they look like a playoff team at this point.
