It's hiking season and if you're planning to hit the trails around El Paso, Texas or anywhere else really; you should beware of a few things.

Right now, when we're not experiencing hurricane force winds, is the perfect time to go hiking. It's not too cold and not too hot ... certainly not as hot as experts predict 2025 will be.

They say to expect one of the hottest summers on record, with temps just under the record setting highs in 2023 and 2024 which both set, then broke, records. If you're going to hike, now is probably the time.

There are a few things you should be aware of though and some are potentially deadly. Before you head out, think your hike through. A little common sense could save your life.

Beware Of Snakes

As it warms up and becomes nicer, we aren't the only ones venturing out. The rattlers are waking up and there will be more than usual this year. Watch where you put your feet and hands and never step or reach into an area if you can't see that it is snake free.

Be careful how close you pass bushes, rocks or anything else that may have a snake in, under or by. They like shade when it's hot and warmth when it's cool so be careful if you're near a source of either.

Follow Safe Hiking Guidelines

  • Stay on marked trails
  • Check the weather
  • Snakebite kits are advisable. If you don't have one, know how to treat a bite.
  • Bring plenty of water and these supplies
  • Know the area you're going to be in and don't hike alone
  • Let someone know where you're going and when you plan to be back
  • Remember what Clint Eastwood said:

Don't take on a hike that is too rugged or demanding for the shape you're in. If you do start to feel a little tired, either stop and rest or turn back and try again another time. Many injuries and deaths are the result of peeps trying to do more than they're capable of or misjudging the difficulty of their chosen route.
