Despite not getting his name called in the first two rounds of Thursday's NBA Draft, it didn't take long for a team to scoop up combo guard Anthony Tarke.

The Detroit Pistons, who drafted Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State) No. 1 on Thursday, signed Tarke to join their summer league team. The Coppin State grad and former Miner will have an opportunity to earn a roster spot in the NBA.

Tarke was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in 2020-21 by averaging 16.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 2.6 steals per game. He shot 47% from the floor and suggests that he has gotten better from beyond the arc during the pre-draft process. He also ranked third in the MEAC in points per game (16.4) and assists (78), and seventh in field goal percentage (47.3) and assist/turnover ratio (1.1).

At UTEP during the 2019-20 season, Tarke played sparingly in just 14 games for the Miners. He decided to transfer after his junior year and reaped the benefits in the long run.

As a breakout in the mid-major ranks, Tarke wasn't on many draft boards to be selected in the first or second rounds. However, he worked out with different teams like the Warriors, Lakers, Timberwolves, Bulls, Suns and Bucks.
