Week two of the high school football season is getting ready to kick off in El Paso on Friday amid a busy week of cancelations due to COVID-19. Nine teams saw their games either canceled or postponed this week after COVID related issues.

Yet, we are still here for week three action on a thin Friday night slate.

Five Things to Know Before Kickoff

1. Cancelations/postponements overwhelm week two scheduled matchups

It felt like a never-ending swarm of cancelations and postponements that hit all at once for the El Paso high school football scene this week. After the week one slate, El Paso High revealed they had a positive case of COVID-19 and postponed their next two matchups, including the Battle of the Claw against Austin (Oct. 16). They joined Irvin and Cathedral as the three teams that had to suspend activities due to positive cases.

Then this week, more contests were suspended. The highly anticipated 1-6A matchup between Eastlake and Americas is postponed until the weekend of Oct. 29-30. Similarly, Eastwood-Pebble Hills, which was suspended due to COVID-19, will be rescheduled for that same weekend as Americas-Eastlake.

Canutillo-El Dorado, another casualty of week two amid coronavirus concerns, will not be rescheduled since it's a non-district matchup.

2. Show must go on: Montwood vs. Franklin, Game of the Night

What was originally set as a doubleheader is now a Friday night showcase at the SAC on Friday, featuring the undefeated Montwood Rams hosting `1-6A foe Franklin.

Montwood looked sharp in their season-opening 42-28 win against Burges last week. Their senior quarterback Joshua Ochoa works like a poised veteran, coming off a 273 passing, four-touchdown performance. HIs top wideout in senior Sal Soto III caught 10 passes for 149 receiving yards and a touchdown last week. And how about their stud linebacker Ivan Escobar? The senior finished with seven tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.

On the flip side, Franklin enters this game following a 30-20 loss to Andress at home. The Cougars threw in a freshman quarterback in the opening week with Shay Smith. The youngster dazzled in his first varsity football game, throwing for 283 yards, rushing for 70 yards and scoring a pair of passing touchdowns, along with two interceptions.

If the Franklin secondary can contain the speedy Montwood receiving core and get a big performance from Smith, the Cougars can hang in this one. But it will be an uphill battle for this Franklin team against a 1-6A district title contender.

Prediction: Montwood 38 - Franklin 24

3. Battle of the Northeast: Andress vs. Chapin

Rivalry action gets underway in week two as Andress squares off against their northeast rivals Chapin.

The Golden Eagles opened the season by beating the Cougars 30-20 on the road with the help of their quarterback-receiver tandem in senior Jeremiah Tosky and junior Jeremiah Cooper. Tosky threw for 216 passing yards and totaled a pair of passing touchdowns while Cooper caught nine passes for 129 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Chapin is a young team under their first-year head coach Ryan Warner, who will coach in his first Huskies-Golden Eagles rivalry game on Friday. Junior quarterback Mason Standerfer led the offense for Chapin in last week's 16-10 loss to Coronado, where he had 67 passing yards and 106 rushing yards. Defensively, Adam Reyes (15) and Timothy Pastran (14) led the way in total tackles.

Andress seems like they are on a mission to avenge an obscure finish to last year's season. It will be tough for a young Huskies team tonight.

Prediction: Andress 24 - Chapin 6

4. Can Burges bounce back against a tough Del Valle squad?

Turnovers plagued the first outing of Burges last week in their 42-28 loss to Montwood and this week, they will have a tough task against Del Valle.

The Conquistadores gave the reigning 1-6A title winners in Americas a scare last week, taking them to the wire and eventually falling 28-20. Del Valle made a statement with their hard-nosed defense and balanced offensive attack last week. Senior tailback Joel Serrano led the charge with 21 carries for 108 yards on the ground.

Burges struggled to stay with the Rams last week and although they have the obvious talent, they couldn't put it all together against Montwood in week one. Top El Paso prospect and four-star running back Tavorus Jones scored twice in his season debut but also had three fumbles. Quarterback Audwin Johnson threw for 228 passing yards and three touchdowns but it simply wasn't enough to best a top-notch Montwood team.

The Mustangs have a huge test for them on Friday night. Del Valle is the favorite to win 5A-I and they took a really good Americas team all the way to the bitter end last week.

Prediction: Del Valle 24 - Burges 23

5. The Clint Lions have something special this season in 4A

Saying that head coach Rosvel Martinez and the Clint Lions were impressive in week one would be an understatement. In their monstrous 61-15 win over El Paso High, the Lions put up a whopping 601 rushing yards as a team. That's unheard of.

Senior running back Gael Lopez carried the ball nine times and led the Lions with 143 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He had help from various other tailbacks like senior Brandon Quintana (10 carries, 90 rushing yards) and junior Isaiah Gonzalez (five carries, 74 rushing yards, 2 TDs).

While Riverside (1-0) will pose a threat in the district, it seems like this group for Clint is ready to win now. They face their rivals in Fabens (0-1) on Friday, who will be led by junior tailback Miguel Delgado (12 carries, 125 rushing yards, 1 TD).
