On Friday New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced an emergency order suspending the right to carry a gun, openly or concealed, in Albuquerque.

The order applies to all of Bernalillo County and is intended to be a temporary 30-day suspension of carrying guns. Obviously, most Republicans, the party of the NRA and 2nd Amendment hardliners are very against this action. Indeed, it’s probably unconstitutional.

But, it’s worth noting how many New Mexico democrats, including some notable anti-gun crusaders are critical of the move.

The sheriff in Bernalillo, a Democrat, has called the order unconstitutional. Democratic State Senator Joe Cervantes has expressed reservations. Same for Rep. Ted Lieu (D-California).

On a wider stage, one of the most recognizable anti-gun activists is against it.

David Hogg, a survivor of the school shooting of 2018 in Florida said, “I support gun safety but there is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution.

It really says something when David Hogg says your gun control plan doesn’t make any sense. It would be like Greta Thunberg coming out against your wind farm.

So, why is Governor Lujan Grisham doing it?

Some of it is at least SEEMS performative. Grisham cited the recent gun-related deaths of children in Albuquerque as factors in her decision.

It is hard to see how a gun ban, constitutional or not, is going to do anything to stem gun violence. It’s temporary, it doesn’t impede people from acquiring guns in any way and it’s unclear how this would be enforced at any rate.

Oh, and it’s most likely unconstitutional. Ask anybody on either side of the political spectrum.
