El Paso Paleta Shots Turn Out To Be Uniquely Local
If you've spent enough nights out in El Paso, there's a good chance you've ordered a paleta shot at least once. Maybe more than once. Maybe enough times that the details of the night get a little blurry after that!
For me, paleta shots are pretty much my favorite way to start a night out. They're sweet, have just enough kick to get the party started, and somehow manage to taste far more dangerous than they actually are. They’ve always felt like one of those automatic El Paso bar orders, where everyone knows what it is, especially the bartender!
Turns out, not everyone in Texas knows.
El Paso Paleta Shots Are A Nightlife Staple
If you're from El Paso, you probably don't need anyone to explain a paleta shot.
You know the flavor. Sweet, spicy, fruity, tangy and inspired by the kinds of Mexican candy flavors many of us grew up with. Around here, ordering one almost feels second nature.
And that's probably why I never thought twice about it. In my head, paleta shots were universal. I fully believed I could walk into a bar anywhere, confidently order one, and immediately get handed exactly what I expected.
Then reality showed up.
Texas Introduced An Unexpected Paleta Shot Reality Check
Recently, I had a friend move to Austin and naturally, one of my first questions involved important things: nightlife.
That's when he delivered a piece of information I genuinely was not prepared for. According to him, nobody in Austin calls them paleta shots!
Nobody.
Instead, they're called "Mexican candy shots." Which, okay, I understand it. The flavor profile lines up. I can see the connection.
But then came the second part of the news.
According to my friend, they don't even taste the same! Suddenly this turned into a full identity crisis.
And apparently, he isn't alone. Social media posts and tweets from El Pasoans have echoed the same experience: leave the Sun City, confidently order a paleta shot, and prepare for confusion.
El Paso May Be Speaking A Different Shot Language
The more I looked into it, the more I realized this might actually be one of those unexpectedly local El Paso things.
Even outside the city, many people seem to recognize these as Mexican candy shots instead. But even this recipe from Texas Monthly doesn't sound like it's the right one we get here in El Paso!
Maybe El Paso adopted its own name. Maybe we all collectively agreed on a different version and never looked back- which I kind of love.
Every city has its thing. El Paso has Chico's debates, mountain watching traditions, and apparently an entirely different nightlife vocabulary.
So if you ever leave town and confidently order a paleta shot only to get a confused stare from your bartender, just know:
You’re not wrong. You’re just from El Paso!
