This would be so cool ... and it's about time.

One of my most favorite places in the world is Cancun, Mexico. Specifically, the area known as the Riviera Maya. Beautiful resorts, pristine beaches where the water is as warm as bath water and there are so many cool things to see and do.

The only downside of traveling to Cancun for me has been what you have to go through to get there. I've considered traveling directly out of the airport in Juarez but that idea presents its own difficulties.

So, I've always stuck with flights out of El Paso International Airport which always calls for a stop somewhere along the way. That's usually Dallas, Houston, North Carolina or Georgia depending on whether you are coming or going.

Customs in Georgia was a nightmare. It took hours, just to say "hi, American and no, I'm not bringing anything back".  We had a 3 hour layover that time and barely made the flight home. Jeez.

Coming home through Dallas once, we waited hours because the crew that was meant for our flight got held up elsewhere by weather and couldn't get to us. (Things in DFW close early by the way so, bring snacks if you're going through there in the evening or at night.)

Pilot error can also come into play. Like the time it took 2 days to get out of El Paso because the pilot broke the initial plane.

All the issues and potential problems that come with changing planes along the way may soon be eliminated as El Paso International Airport hopes to begin offering direct flights from El Paso to spots all over Mexico.

Sam Rodriguez, El Paso International Airport Director, told KDBC:

... it's only a matter of time.

"I can't tell you a specific date until we get that positive announcement from an airline and I can certainly tell you there's a couple of them looking at it right now potentially for summer of next year"

The Director also said:

... adding flights to directly to Mexico wouldn't be an issue for El Paso as the airport already is compliant with the Federal Aviation Administration international regulations and receives private international flights. - KDBC

I sooooooo hope this happens, sooner than soon. C'mon El Paso International ... Cancun misses me and I miss her.
