The 89th legislative session for Texas is in January and there's already a ton of bills to be voted on. Private schools, abortion, the border and guns included.

As 2024 winds down, Texas lawmakers are already getting ready to see what laws they want passed in 2025. Currently, over 1,000 bills are already set to be presented.

Most bills typically don't make it to the Governor's desk but many will. One that's expected to go the distance will mean a great deal to parents of school age kids.

According to the Texas Tribune, lower numbers are reserved for the more high priority bills and SB 2 is way high on Lt. Gov. Patrick's agenda. It would allow Texans to use tax dollars to pay for their kids to go to private schools.

Many Texas schools are striving to be great, and are great, and most are good. Unfortunately, no matter their effort, some schools struggle to meet the unique educational needs that some students require. Parents should be empowered to place their child in the best learning environment, whether that is a public or private school. - ltgov.texas.gov

Obviously, parents make up a BIG percentage of voters in Texas so, I would imagine, that one will pass.

What Other Bills Will Be Presented?

Other issues that Texans tend to take extra seriously include access to and the availability of abortions, (HB 257) and border security. HB 354 would create a Texas Border Protection Unit whose officers could arrest people crossing the Texas-Mexico border illegally and watch over construction and maintenance of physical border barriers.

What About Gun Control?

A couple of gun bills are in the running.

  • SB 83 would allow licensed gun owners to carry concealed handguns on public school grounds.
  • HB 644 limits the civil liability of businesses that allow concealed carry on their premises.
  • HB 834 makes it a crime for people to carry a firearm, (handguns excluded), in counties with a population of over 1 million. Some exceptions apply.
