Texas Loves Dr Pepper But Not As Much as THIS State
We know that Texas has a huge love for Dr. Pepper; so much it could very well be a contender for the unofficial soft drink for the state. Its inventor, Charles Alderton, came to Waco & with the help of mixing different fruit flavors together, he inadvertently created Dr Pepper in 1886. Thus the legend was born...
But while we wholeheartedly love the drink here in Texas, we are NOT the Dr Pepper Capital of the World. That honor goes to another state...way on the East Coast. And it's all thanks to one man from San Augustine, Texas: John W. Davis.
This Virginia city is the Dr Pepper Capital of the World
When John W Davis moved to Roanoke, Virginia, he opened the first Dr Pepper Bottling factory on McClanahan St back in 1936. John stayed there until he resigned as chairman in 1975.
Today you can see the love for the Texas made soft drink all over the city of Roanoke, including the iconic Dr Pepper sign at the corner of E Campbell & 116. The city also holds its annual Dr Pepper Day celebrations on October 24 (unlike in Texas where EVERY DAY is Dr Pepper Day).
There's even a roadside attraction for Charles Alderton's gravesite located in Rural Retreat, VA. The site is called, appropriately, the Grave of Doctor Pepper.
It's a very nice gesture but we absolutely appreciate the love for Dr Pepper in Virginia. But don't forget that the official Dr Pepper factory is still located in Waco (you can even get your named signed on the bricks while AT the factory).
No matter which state it is, one thing is for certain, the love for Dr Pepper has going on for centuries & will continue for centuries to come.
