Over the weekend, Texas Tech welcomed the Colorado Buffalos to Lubbock and while the Red Raiders lost, 41-27, it was the classic tortilla toss that made the headlines!
What is the Texas Tech Tortilla Toss?
The Texas Tech tortilla toss is a quirky and beloved tradition where fans at Texas Tech University throw tortillas onto the field during football games. This tradition started in the 1990s and quickly became a fun way for fans to show their support and excitement for the Red Raiders.
The origins are a little fuzzy, but legend says before a Tech-A&M football game in 1992, an ESPN announcer joked that Lubbock had "nothing but Texas Tech football and a tortilla factory." In response, fans brought tortillas to the game and tossed them at kickoff!
Although it’s not officially allowed, security often overlooks the first round of tortilla tossing at the beginning of the game, so it’s something that’s widely accepted by fans and even expected!
On Saturday, as soon as tortillas began hitting the field, some Colorado players began picking them up!
