Around 1,000 dogs have come down with a mysterious flu-like illness in the midwest and the virus has now spread to Texas.

It's known as Canine Influenza and was affecting dogs in the Chicago area but, now cases are being reported in Ohio and Texas.  Another form of the virus recently appeared but that vaccine may not work on this version. A new vaccine being developed is still four to six months away.

The virus doesn't seem to affect humans but, we can spread it so wash your hands frequently and minimize contact between your furry family and unfamiliar dogs. If yours does get sick, keep his little butt home and load up on grapefruit seed extract. It has been used in treating infected dogs.

Don't have a dog?  What's wrong with you?  There are lots of them looking for good homes here in El Paso, visit the El Paso Humane Society and get one!
