Crazy Deer Fight In West El Paso (Graphic Photos)
Life in El Paso can get a little more exciting than you'd expect and it's not just the people that keep you on your toes. The animals can get rowdy too.
The closer you get to the mountains in El Paso, (like the desert edges of town or natural water sources like the river), the more animal encounters you're likely to have.
Up near the mountain; you get foxes, bats, skunks, lizards, squirrels, quail and more including deer. LOTS of deer.
They're pretty chill and they roam all over the neighborhood, foraging for food and water. Many folks leave food and water out for them and they are pretty trusting of their human neighbors.
They won't necessarily run from you but they're skittish and they keep their distance. Unless they can't. It's "rutting season", (aka mating season), and the males are trying to get lucky. Meaning, other males are NOT welcome.
What Were The Deer Doing?
Today, I saw 2 deer fighting. Well, I thought, after a closer look, I saw their heads were actually tied together. They had gotten into something, (found out later that it was a hammock), and managed to actually "knit" their antlers together.
This battle had apparently been raging in the street and across yards for about 30 minutes before anybody called for help and it continued for at least another 30. They went through yards, bounced off cars, fell over fences ... CRAZY.

An El Paso Animal Control officer managed to get a rope on them and held them up against a fence while I tried to cut the rope to separate them. We weren't having much luck but once Texas Wildlife got there, we had the upper hand.
One officer finally, actually physically pinned the bucks down. Some of the struggle was filmed and you can see it below. Be careful who else is watching though ... it's kind of rough.
Once the dominant deer was pinned, officer #2 cut off the rest of the rope and, bang ... off he went.
Free At Last
Wounded and running on fumes but also running like crazy, he was finally free. Watch him go toward the end of this video ...
Thanks again to those Texas Wildlife Officers and the El Paso Animal Control officer, (he left before I could get his name or a photo.), that deer made it. I wish they both did but it didn't go that way.
Not the happiest ending but it could have been worse. Thanks to these folks being patient and kind, at least one of the two was saved.
I really thought both deer were about to get shot as breaking up a deer fight is no joke. That and I learned a long time ago that when life, limb and property are at risk, a bullet is typically the "go to" plan in these cases.

These patient, caring folks managed to avoid that though. One of them said that in almost 30 years on the job, this was a first for this particular situation.
At the risk of of (possibly, serious), injury; they managed to cut one loose to fight another day. Much respect to them.
