Outspoken Smashing Pumpkins outspoken frontman Billy Corgan went on a rant about how music culture and ethos have been negatively affected by shows like ‘American Idol‘ and ‘X Factor‘ at a SXSW panel on March 13. Despite his distaste for such programs, the frontman said that he would certainly take a gig as a judge on one of those very shows if offered.

“I’d love it,” Corgan admitted to Spinner. He’s not being a hypocrite, either, since he said that the shows themselves are not the problem. It’s actually how society reacts to them and the subsequent lack of ability to combat the effects of the shows that makes them questionable. Yes, his argument is tricky, but he’s apparently thought quite a bit about the subject.

He explains, “I don’t have a problem with ‘Idol’ or ‘X Factor,’ I have a problem with when those things are not given the proper contextual hue.” That’s fancy speak for how the shows manufacture their stars and their episodes.

Corgan also applauded the shows for not masking their intentions.
