Texas is full of malls; both open & closed. And the same goes for our neighbors to the west in New Mexico; there are many malls you can find in the state. However not every single one stays open; some close down and are left standing. And you can find abandoned malls in New Mexico.

NOTE: These buildings are still private property so please no trespassing.

Traditions Outlet Mall

The one that locals are very familiar with is the Traditions Outlet Mall located at 601 West Frontage Rd in Budagers, New Mexico off of I-25. It was originally called the New Mexico Outlet Center Mall when it opened up in 1993. It closed in 1997 & changed its name to "Traditions!" in 2000.

People still visit the old Traditions Mall to see for themselves. You can actually see drone footage of the mall looked like back in 2018.

Currently the mall sits empty; however it was purchased in 2019 with the promise of becoming a film studio.

Winrock Center

If you travel to Albuquerque, you will find what most locals would consider is the other well known dead/abandoned mall in New Mexico: the Winrock Center. It was built in 1960 to rival with the Coronado Center Mall. It was considered a dead mall in late 2006. However, the mall may be gone, the Winrock Center website lists places that are in the area like Dave & Busters & BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, with plans of more shops opening in the future. So while the Winrock Center Mall is no more, there still IS a Winrock Center.

Some other "dead malls" people talk about online are the Cottonwood Mall in Albuquerque, New Mexico & the Animas Valley Mall in Farmington, New Mexico. These 2 malls aren't truly considered dead malls as they are still open; people have really used the term "dead mall" to describe their 90s aesthetics or, in the case of the Animas Valley Mall being talked about on Reddit, the amount of vacancy in the mall.

Still, both malls are open so I think it will be a while before they would be considered "dead".

And the same rules apply to the Rio West Mall in Gallup, New Mexico. They're still open, people still shop. But... I know everyone's definition is different.

Let's hope it's a while before any of these places become truly abandoned malls
