What’s Your “Point of No Return” When You Forget Your Phone?

Today, I left my phone at home and I didn’t realize it until I was already a mile or two away. I thought about going back to get it but I was already running a little late because I had to scrape frost off my windshield. So, my “point of no return” is under two miles IF I’m running late. Even if I HADN’T been late, it still would have been 50/50 whether I was going back for it.

I brought the scenario up with my co-workers, who are Millennials. I asked Lisa and Joanna what they would have done and they both said they would have turned back to get their phones. Lisa said that even if she didn’t realize until she had gotten all the way TO work, she would STILL turn back around and get her phone.

I don’t know if anyone’s asked this question but, here it goes: how far away would YOU have to be before you decided NOT to go back home for your phone? Are you…

A.) A Buzz? If you’re more than a couple of minutes out you’re probably NOT going back.

B.) A Joanna? If you’re 5-10 minutes away you don’t go back.

C.) A Lisa? Even if you make it all the way to work you’d STILL go back to get your phone.

I know there are a lot of people who are going to say, “I NEED my phone” and, for many people, that’s true. If, for example, your job REQUIRES you to have your phone you’re not going to blow off work to save a trip back home. So, that should be another option:

D.) My phone is essential to my work/school/catfishing scam. I’m going back for it not matter what.

Lisa brought up another point: what if you’re going out of town? “If I’m going to be out of town for even a day, I’ll go back for my phone even if I’m a hundred miles away”.
