What You Need to Know about Wednesday’s City of El Paso Memorial Service

The City of El Paso is hosting a memorial service this Wednesday, Aug. 14, to honor the 22 people who lost their lives in the recent Walmart mass shooting, and to give our community a place to continue healing together.

The service is set for 7 p.m. at Southwest University Park with a live simulcast at 4 other locations, including the park up the road from the Walmart where the tragedy took place.

The event is free and open to the public, and free parking will be available as will streetcar service. Below is everything you need to know about Wednesday's Community Memorial.

Where: Southwest University Park
Time: 7 p.m. Gates will open at 6 p.m. The ballpark will remain open until it reaches capacity.

Memorial Service Simulcasts

In order to accommodate every El Pasoan, Juarez resident, and Las Crucen who wants to attend, the memorial will also be simulcast at:

• Cleveland Square across the street from the ballpark
• Outdoors at the Convention Center Plaza
• Indoors at the neighboring Abraham Chavez Theatre

In addition to the downtown venues, a simulcast will also be shown at Ponder Park at WH Burges Drive, just off Viscount. [Map]

Parking

Parking will be free at all metered parking spaces downtown and at the following parking garages and lots Downtown beginning at 5 p.m. [Map]

• Convention Center Parking Garage
• Union Plaza Transit Terminal
• Mills Building Garage
• 122 Kansas Parking Garage
• Wells Fargo Parking Garage
• Surface lot at 401 Mesa, across from San Jacinto Plaza
• Surface lot at 415 Mesa, behind Stewart Title

Free parking will also be available uptown at the Glory Road transit center by UTEP as well as metered parking around the Cincinnati District starting at 5 p.m. Those who park there can ride the streetcar for free to downtown. All six streetcars will be in service that day.

At Ponder Park, the public may park for free at Sun Metro’s Eastside Terminal parking lot, 1165 Sunmount Drive, GECU parking lot, and all on-street parking spaces.

Restroom Accommodations

Southwest University Park, the Abraham Chavez Theater, and the Convention Center all offer restroom accommodations. Off-site restrooms will also be available to the public downtown at the Museum of History and the Main Library. Ponder Park attendees may use Sun Metro’s Eastside Transit Terminal facilitates.

What You Can and Cannot Bring to Ballpark, Convention Center

Acceptable items include cell phones and hand bags (all subject to search). Prohibited items include non-service animals, banners and signs, glass containers, alcohol, weapons, and outside food and drinks.

Acceptable items include cell phones, lawn chairs, banners and signs, hand bags, outside food and non-alcoholic drinks in non-glass containers. Prohibited items include alcohol, weapons, and glass containers.

Candles

Prayer candles will not be permitted. Please use cell phone flashlights or candle apps instead.

Facebook Live Stream

For out-of-towners and those who cannot make it in person, the memorial will be streamed live on City of El Paso Facebook.

Street Closures

Streets closures will begin at 5 p.m.

Downtown street closures:

• Santa Fe Street between Wyoming Avenue and San Antonio Avenue
• Missouri Avenue between Durango Street and El Paso Street
• W. Franklin Avenue between Santa Fe Street and El Paso Street

Ponder Park street closures:

• Viscount Boulevard (one lane closed in each direction) from Sunmount to Bellrose Drive
• WH Burges Drive from Ash Lane to Sun Mount Drive
• Juniper Street from Edgemere Boulevard to WH Burges Drive
• Catalpa Lane from WH Burges Drive to Viscount Boulevard
