Students at Mountain View High School recently were taught how to treat a gunshot wound during a "Stop the Bleed" event from state certified EMTs.

While some may think this is an extreme lesson, and some had a cynical response, I actually think this is a step in the right direction!

Life happens, and wounds- while not always gunshot wounds- happen, and knowing how to treat them is an important skill to have. I don't believe it's political, as many in the comment section have made it out to be- it's a good thing!

I believe it's necessary to teach students these type of skills in order to prepare them for the unexpected! In fact, here are four other life saving skills I believe students should be taught- and the earlier the better!

1. CPR

CPR is a great skill to have- student or regular working adult. If you can become CPR certified, I highly recommend it!

2. Help with Choking

On the topic of CPR, knowing the Heimlich maneuver is also an important skill to have; especially around children! While it may seem like some students are too young to know how to do this, it's never to early for them to know the basics!

3. Treating a Burn

We have fire drills, yes, but I always wondered what do we do if one of our classmates gets injured during a fire? I think it's a good idea to teach students what to do in the case of a fire injury, while they wait for help.

4. Treating Low Blood Sugar

This one is probably a new one, but you never know! Students with diabetes are probably well monitored, but sometimes someone's sugar can drop out of nowhere- a student who knows what to do in this situation may help save lives!

What life saving skill do you wish you learned in school?
