This is something I kept seeing on my social media for a few months now. The headline was always something like this... How Jon Favreau Saved Gina Carano. It was almost daily I would see this headline from different sources. The main facts of these stories were the following:

  • Gina Carano posts questionable things on social media about anti-mask, etc.
  • Jon Favreau is a fan of Gina's and wants her to continue on as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian.
  • Jon Favreau has enough pull at Disney that he outranks anyone that wants her fired.

Well, that's no longer the case because it was announced last night that Gina Carano is no longer employed by LucasFilm.

Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.

I follow Gina on social media and you could always tell what he political views were, but it didn't seem anything that was crossing a line that would constitute firing. She did post some things that certainly towed the line, but also seemed to realize her own ignorance...

[Carano] previously shar[ed] misinformation about mask wearing and voter fraud. In November 2020, she made light of people including their preferred pronouns on social media by adding “beep/bop/boop” to her Twitter bio, which many fans called out as transphobic. Carano later removed the words after she said she spoke to her “Mandalorian” co-star Pedro Pascal. “He helped me understand why people were putting them in their bios. I didn’t know before but I do now. I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to. I stand against bullying, especially the most Vulnerable & [support] freedom to choose,” she wrote at the time.

Some of the things she posted though seem to be beyond recovery. She posted a photo on her social media that had the following text with it...

Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors … even by children.

“Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views.”

She would also like posts on social media that said there is no systemic racism problem in America and that it's actually a "violent, leftist extremist problem." And that you were more likely to be assaulted for being a Trump supporter than for your race.

All political items aside, are we really going to miss that much with her being gone from The Mandalorian? Her being cast as Cara Dune is maybe the one move Jon Favreau has made that really didn't move the needle much for me. They tried to make her an action star by having her as the lead in a movie called Haywire, which also starred Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Bill Paxton, and Channing Tatum. How bad was her acting? They had to digitally alter her voice to sound lower for the movie.
