Texas And New York Are Battling Over More Than Basketball
The Knicks may have won Game 1 of the NBA Finals, but Texas still has something New York can't touch.
Tortillas.
As the Spurs try to bounce back in the series, Texans can take comfort in one undeniable fact: when it comes to flour tortillas, we're playing in an entirely different league.
Sure, New York has bagels. They're great. Nobody is arguing otherwise. But if you've ever had a warm Texas flour tortilla fresh off the comal, you know this isn't really a competition.

Which is why a recent NBA Finals-related tortilla debate has Texans feeling especially confident.
The NBA Finals Just Became A Tortilla Debate
Ahead of the series, Texas Congressman Greg Casar presented New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with a package of H-E-B butter tortillas. AOC responded with a box of New York bagels, and suddenly the NBA Finals had an unexpected side competition.
The exchange was all in good fun, but Texans immediately knew where they stood. Because while New York may have some iconic foods, Texas has tortillas.
And that's a pretty tough thing to beat.
Texans Already Know Who Won This Matchup
Here's the funny part: I've never actually been to an H-E-B.
Living in El Paso means I've spent years hearing Texans talk about H-E-B the way people talk about a favorite sports team, beloved family member, or life-changing experience.

And one of the things I hear about most often? The tortillas.
At this point, I've heard so many Texans rave about H-E-B butter tortillas that I've accepted their greatness as fact without ever tasting one myself. Which leads me to one very important realization:
AOC got to try H-E-B tortillas before I did!
I'm not saying I'm jealous, I’m saying I'd like to file an official complaint.
Sorry New York But Texas Has This One
To be clear, this isn't an attack on New York, the city has incredible food. Bagels deserve their legendary status.
But Texans have a relationship with tortillas that goes beyond simple appreciation. We recommend them to visitors. We bring them to family gatherings. We debate where to find the best ones.
And apparently, we now use them for NBA Finals trash talk.
The Knicks got Game 1. Texas got the tortillas. And based on everything I've heard, that's the prize I'd rather have.
