I have a cousin who we call "Elizabeth Taylor." She's been married five times, and twice was to the same person! So, it turns out, it's completely legal for her to remarry the same guy twice! I know it sounds weird, why would you want to remarry your ex? Well, it's not as uncommon as you might think!

So, you broke up, then made up, and then broke up again! But now you're thinking about getting remarried? Classic. But if you're doing this Texas-style, you're in luck. Turns out, Texas marriage law is surprisingly chill when it comes to remarrying the same person. No judgment, no red tape, and definitely no cap on how many times you can say “I do” to the same ex. Yep, this state practically invented the romantic reboot.

Here’s What Texas Law Actually Says

Legally speaking, Texas doesn’t care how many times you marry the same person. Seriously. There’s no rule saying you can’t tie the knot with your ex over and over with one big caveat: just as long as you’re not married to someone else at the time (because, you know, bigamy).

Even better? If you're getting back together with your ex-spouse, you don’t have to wait. Texas law skips the usual 30-day post-divorce cooling-off period if you’re remarrying the same person. So if you two decide to run it back the day after the divorce is finalized, go for it. Just make sure you’ve got a fresh marriage license- love may be free, but paperwork isn’t!

What to Know Before You Remarry Your Ex in Texas

Before you throw on the dress again or book the courthouse (again), here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You need a new marriage license.
Even if it’s the same person, it’s a brand-new legal deal. No shortcuts, no reusing old paperwork.
  • No waiting period if it’s your ex.
Texas makes you wait 30 days after a divorce to marry someone new, but not if you’re remarrying the same person.
  • Your divorce has to be final.
Almost remarried before the ink dried? Yeah, don’t do that. The divorce needs to be legally finalized first.
  • The courts don’t care how many times you do it.
There’s no legal limit. Marry your ex once or ten times, as long as each marriage follows the rules, Texas is fine with it.
  • It’s still going to cost you.
The license, the officiant, the whatever-else-you-splurge-on, none of that gets cheaper just because you’ve done it before.

So yeah, Texas law is basically giving you a big thumbs up for round two… or three… or whatever number you’re on!
