WTH? The Government Doesn’t Know Where Texas Is?
Yep, you read that right. The US government can't decide exactly where, regionally speaking, Texas should be.
The USA is divided into several regions and Texas, being always a little different and reluctant to conform, doesn't exactly fit established zones "Mountain" or "Pacific".
To be honest, I never really thought about it beyond the El Paso area which, everyone seems to agree, is the southwest. Texas as a whole can't be so easily summed up and even Uncle Sam isn't sure where to put us.
At the federal level, different departments place Texas in different regions. The US Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say we're West South Central. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists us as Southeast while the U.S. Forest Service says we're Southern and the U.S. Department of Agriculture uses 2 regions; Southwest for SNAP and the Plains area for agricultural research.
The Federal Emergency Management Administration ... I'm not sure whether I find this funny or scary ... gave up. They don't list a region at all.
What Region Is Texas?
In my humble opinion, I think Texas should be its own region. We're just Texas, that's it. A reddit post showed I'm not alone on that. One user even pointed out that, (when you compare the distances from east Texas to the east coast and west Texas to the west coast vs. the distance from west Texas to east), we're bigger than the entire southern and southwestern regions.

We should totally have our own region. Let's go ahead and change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Texas too. Why not?
