Is This Really The Most Dangerous Swimmin’ Hole In Texas?
If you're a swimmer it is. When you think of giant, deadly water critters, Florida and Louisiana probably come to mind first but don't sleep on Texas. We're #3 ...
Alligators and crocodiles are not exactly friendly and, while they may choose to ignore you and let you swim on by, they're equally capable of ripping you to shreds and eating you alive.
Something you really, really want to keep in mind if you visit this particular part of the lone star state.
Choke Canyon Reservoir, in between San Antonio and Corpus Christi, is a beautiful area. It's also home to the 3rd most 'gator and crocodile infested areas in the USA. Half a million "modern day dinosaurs" call Choke Canyon home.
These guys don't really have any natural enemies and hunting them in Choke Canyon is limited so, they live a long time. In fact, unless killed by humans, another gator or predator, accident or disease, they won't die.
They get real big though and ... unless one of those few things does 'em in ... they'll eventually grow so big that they can't get enough food so they starve to death.
Some of these alligators can grow even longer than 14 feet since hunting in the area is limited. In fact, one hunter snagged a gator just under 14 feet at Choke Canyon in October 2024 that weighed in at a whopping 750 pounds. That's not too far behind the largest gator ever hunted in Texas (800 pounds), which was also caught in Choke Canyon Reservoir. - explore.com
It's a nice place to visit but I'd think twice about swimming there.
