New PSA Warns Of Texas Law That Could Cost You Big Time – From Over $1K To $4K
In a recent PSA, Governor Greg Abbott warns Texas drivers to "move over or slow down" and those that don't "pay" attention are going to "pay" up.
You've seen the signs flashing along I-10 for a while now, cautioning drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles in the breakdown lanes or, sometimes, regular travel lanes.
Now the lone star state is getting serious about it, giving out pricey penalties and adding a few new vehicles to the list of those to watch out for.
The law originally called for drivers to move over into the next lane away from emergency personnel working or vehicles with emergency lights on or to slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit. If it's 60mph, you would need to back off to 40mph. If the limit is 25mph or less, drivers must slow to 5mph.
What If I Don't Move Over Or Slow Down?
Not only will you be ticketed, the fines are WAY up there. A first offense could set you back $1,250. If not following this law results in serious injuries, the driver could be jailed and fined up to $4,000. They could face other legal and punitive penalties as well.
Originally, this law applied to official, emergency vehicles with emergency lights flashing but a few other vehicles have now been added to the list. In addition to police, fire, and ambulances; you also have to do this for TxDoT vehicles, tow trucks and utility vehicles.
