Kellogg’s Under Scrutiny For Food Coloring By Texas AG
Looks like it's curtains for Toucan Sam and Froot Loops! Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into Kellogg's for potentially breaking the state's consumer protection laws. This comes amid Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s crusade to ban Fruit Loops due to their artificial dyes.
Kellogg's is the producer of cereals like Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, and Frosted Flakes, and now Paxton has initiated an investigation for potentially violating state laws by marketing these products as "healthy." The concern arises from the inclusion of petroleum-based artificial food colorings in these cereals, which have been associated with health issues such as hyperactivity and obesity.
Paxton's office highlighted that while Kellogg has removed these artificial dyes from products in Canada and Europe, they remain present in the U.S. versions. Paxton stated, "In no world should foods that include these dyes be advertised as healthy." This was also the stance Health Secretary Kennedy took just last year when it came to Froot Loops.
Kennedy's stance came after protesters gathered at Kellogg's headquarters in Michigan, urging the company to eliminate artificial dyes and preservatives from their U.S. products, making the same argument that Kellogg uses natural colorings in countries like Canada, artificial dyes are still used in the U.S. Activists presented petitions with over 400,000 signatures, citing evidence that artificial dyes can contribute to behavioral issues in children.
As much as it may sound like a first world problem, I think I have to agree with the Texas AG and the Health Secretary; if other countries have banned these dyes, why do we still have them here in the US? Sure, Froot Loops may seem more appetizing with their brightly colored loops, but in the end, we should still strive for something more natural!
