New Major League Baseball Team Coming To Texas? Maybe
There could be new sports rivalries in Texas. Believe it or not, a hurricane in Florida nay have just landed Texas a 3rd major league baseball team.
Austin may no longer be the 4th largest city in Texas but they could very well turn out to be the home of a new major league baseball franchise if everything goes well.
The Tampa Bay Rays could be moving to the lone star state and Texas baseball fans can thank Hurricane Milton, and the billions of dollars in damages he did, for the opportunity.
Hurricane Milton did a number on Florida and now, with all the expenses of rebuilding, the new stadium Tampa Bay was to get seems off the table. They'll call George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, where the New York Yankees do spring training, home for 2025. After that, the likelihood of them staying in Florida is by no means guaranteed.
Why Was Austin Selected?
Austin was tabbed as one of seven potential relocation candidates for the Rays in a story published by ESPN's Jeff Passan on Wednesday. Nashville, Salt Lake City, Portland, Charlotte and Raleigh round out the rest of the domestic options, with Montreal standing as an international landing spot. - chron
Central Texas may not be super well known as big time baseball lovers hotspot but Austin does actually make a lot of sense. Despite having just fallen from the 4th, to the 5th largest Texas city, they're still pretty big and they're still growing.
The city is projected to cross one million residents by 2025. Texas Longhorns football is the only main competition for sports attention in town, and there should be an influx of fans from the ever-growing south-of-Austin corridor. - chron
If this does actually happen, don't expect it to happen overnight. Even if Austin is chosen, it will be years before it really happens.
