Texas Just Knocked California Out Of Top Wine Spot
Need a fine, Valentine wine? A teeny little winery in the Texas Hill Country, near San Antonio ya'll, just took California down a notch. Trying the wine though, may be tough.
It only took about 6 years for Andy and Missy Ivankovich to buy a winery and go from knowing almost nothing about wine production to taking the #1 spot away from all the pros in Cali's famed wine country.
Yep, you read that right - from novices to champs in only 6 years time. We not only do things bigger in Texas, we're quicker too.
About 90% of all the wine produced in the USA comes from California. The pros in California's wine country, particularly its famed Napa Valley, know their shizzle so, I'm not pointing and laughing here. They earned their reputations.
So do the judges for the annual wine competition held by the San Francisco Chronicle. This year, for the first time in 40 years, they awarded a #1 spot to a non - California based winery. Singing Waters Vineyards in Comfort, (great name), Texas.
Texas made their mark and the Texans that did it weren't even pros, just typical Texans - proud and driven. They not only won their category ... best cabernet sauvignon - they won the toughest sub category.
Cabernet sauvignon makes up 60% of the red wine market in the United States, meaning Singing Water Vineyards was taking on thousands of other producers – many which operate on a larger scale and under more favorable grape-growing conditions. On top of that, the couple was competing in the $90 to $99 price range, which Ivankovich explained is the most competitive market within the category. - mysanantonio.com
The only problem, sorry El Paso wine lovers, is that getting this particular, award winning wine isn't easy. It's only available to members of the Singing Water Wine Club or at these Texas restaurants:
