Target Stores in Texas to Limit Their Pride Selection
Target stores across Texas will be a bit less colorful this Pride season. If you were planning on buying your Pride products at Target this year, you'll be in for a surprise.
Target stores will be scaling back on their in-store Pride selection, making it available in select stores and instead, will focus on online sales of the LGBTQ+ themed merchandise. This comes after Target faced severe backlash and boycotts over their pride selection last year, where several attorneys general believed the stores Pride campaign violated child protection laws.
Last year, Target did report a major decrease in sales after customers slammed the company for Pride Month merchandise it displayed at it stores- and even pulled some of the merchandise.
In a press release, Target shared their plan for how they plan to celebrate Pride not just in June, but year round with their "Pride+ Business Council, hosting internal events and experiences where interested team members can learn, reflect, celebrate and connect."
Target has not said which stores specifically will be having the in-store Pride selection, but we can expect to see a scaled down version of the Pride campaign next month in stores across Texas.
What is Pride Month?
Pride Month is an annual observance held in June to celebrate the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and others) community, their history, and their ongoing fight for equality and acceptance. The month-long celebration includes various events such as parades, marches, parties, workshops, and concerts organized by LGBTQ+ communities and allies worldwide.
June was chosen for Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred in June 1969 in New York City.
