The rock community is mourning the loss of one of the greatest this morning.

Chris Cornell, the solo artist and lead singer for Audioslave, Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog has passed away at the young age of 52 years old. The singer was in Detroit, Michigan where he was performing with his band Soundgarden at Detroit's Fox Theatre. His rep confirmed his passing with the media:

"His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. They would like to thank his fans for his continuous love and loyalty, and ask that their privacy be respected at this time."

Soundgarden were only two thirds of the way through their North American tour and were scheduled to appear at this weekend's huge Rock on the Range festival on Friday.
