Parents Shocked After Homework Assignment Includes Rape Question
A Texas school is under fire for asking students to figure out who "raped Suzy" in a homework assignment. The Klein Independent School District says they're investigating how an inappropriate question was put on a homework assignment for students at Klein Collins High School. 90 biology students at the Houston neighborhood high school were given a homework assignment with a question about rape. According to KPRC News, the question read:
"Suzy was assaulted in an alley and is a victim of rape. The police collected a sample of sperm that was left at the crime scene and now have 3 suspects in custody. Which of the suspects raped Suzy?"
Under the question, students were given three sets of DNA and told to compare it to that of a felon to identify who the rapist was. Parents were "appalled" by the question and upset that a teacher would believe it was an appropriate question for minors to answer. One parent, Cookie VonHaven, said she couldn't believe the question was on her daughter's homework:
“It’s upsetting and I know girls this age, just the thought ... they know that rape is forced non-consensual sex and that upsets them. That’s why I can’t fathom a teacher putting that on a test.”
After the news went viral, the school district released a statement saying that the homework assignment was not apart of the school's curriculum and that the "corrective action" had been taken.
