Ozzy Osbourne Loves New Mexico Food & Texas Mariachi
We know there are several stories of Ozzy Osbourne visiting Texas & New Mexico but who would've thought that the Prince of Darkness is a fan of mariachi music? He certainly enjoyed watching the Las Cruces group, Mariachi Aguilas, when he came through New Mexico a few years ago in 2018.
The one that really seemed to grab Ozzy's attention was the El Paso singer, Alfonso Loya. And if that wasn't cool enough, Ozzy showed his appreciation for Alfonso & the group on tv too.
When did Alfonso Loya & Mariachi Aguilas sing for Ozzy Osbourne?
On A&E's Ozzy & Jack's World Detour, Season 3 showed an episode with Ozzy, Jack & Kelly Osbourne took a trip to New Mexico. On that trip, they stopped at a place called Sparky's in Hatch, New Mexico to try the burgers. They also came to enjoy the chili milkshakes & learned how to make pistachios.
It's at Sparky's is where Ozzy saw Mariachi Aguilas, and Alfonso, perform for the Osbourne family. The group did a version of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid", and the best part was that Alfonso even sung it in Spanish.
Watching the performance, and Ozzy's words afterwards, it's clear that he never knew his songs sung like that before. But you can tell...he loved it.
I asked Alfonso Loya how he felt performing for Ozzy Osbourne, he gave me the details on how much the group had to prepare for Ozzy's arrival:
"We knew like 2 weeks in advance and we had to adapt the songs into mariachi. We did an arrangement for Crazy Train and Paranoid we sent them to the producers and they chose Paranoid. I had to translate them into Spanish too. That was fun...We were there very early in the morning before Ozzy arrived and they shot all those close ups so by the time Ozzy got there we were pretty warmed up and confident. We did on take for him and it went great, he showed up with his son and daughter and I even went up to their table and sang to their faces. He loved it and stood up and clapped afterwards"
Alfonso also put the clip (in higher quality) on his Instagram account AND was nice enough to give us photos he took of him & Ozzy himself.
Even though it was a short period of time, I'm glad Ozzy came to enjoy, not just the food in New Mexico, but appreciate the musical talent in the Borderland. Long live the Ozzman.
