No Fireflies in El Paso? Where Can I Find These Lit Insects?
You know that song that goes: "you would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies"? Well, I literally would not believe my eyes because I have never seen a firefly!
That's right. Recently on the show, Buzz revealed that while on his trip to Oklahoma, he spent an evening looking at fireflies- to which I revealed that I have never seen one in real life! I've seen them in movies, TV and music videos (looking at you Owl City) but never in real life!
So I asked around; where in El Paso can I find these lit up insects?
That didn't help very much. Someone mentioned that Ascarate Park has fireflies, but the conditions have to be just right for them to appear. Apparently, if I really want to see some fireflies, I'd have to go to Central Texas. The El Paso desert is not ideal conditions for fireflies to live!
Fireflies are typically not associated with a desert climate; which makes sense, every time fireflies are mentioned, it's usually in a wooded area- not the middle of a desert!
But I don't want to go all the way to Central Texas! I'm sure if I head on out to Ruidoso, maybe Cloudcroft I can find some, right? I just want to see some fireflies- and find out if you really can gather them into a mason jar and use it as a guiding light!
