NFL Butt Fumbles Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show: What About Metallica or Even Green Day?
In the most questionable football decision since the the Seattle Seahawks decided to throw on 2nd and Goal from the 1 yard line with 20 seconds left against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, the NFL has decided to tap Coldplay as the halftime act for Super Bowl 50. NFL execs must have their heads so far up their behinds that even Mark Sanchez, the quarterback who invented the butt fumble, is likely questioning this decision.
Why, you ask? Nothing against Coldplay, really. The British band plays a fine brand of catchy, safe melodic alternative rock music. But Super Bowl 50 is taking place in the Bay Area, home of the mighty Metallica! What better act to rock a stadium full of football fans with monster riffs than the biggest American metal band of all time?
This was it! This was the year for Metallica to headline the Super Bowl halftime show. Instead, James Hetfield and the boys have been relegated to a show called "The Night Before" taking place Feb. 6 at San Francisco's AT&T Park, a baseball stadium an hour away from Levi's Stadium, where the Super Bowl will take place the next day. Sure, it's better than nothing, but why not give Metallica the main stage in the place they call home? Imagine a four-song set consisting of "Master of Puppets," "Seek & Destroy," "Fade to Black" and "Enter Sandman"?
Wait, you say! The NFL would never go for metal no matter where the Super Bowl is taking place. Well, how about Bay Area punk rock heroes Green Day? Surely, they would have even been a better choice than Coldplay. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is one of rock's great showmen, and the band has hit after hit to choose from for their set.
The NFL has been playing it safe for several years since Janet Jackson flashed her nipple during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2004, but it's time to man up and give fans a show that hits as hard as the players on the gridiron.
