New Mexico is known as the land of enchantment and it truly is an amazing place, loaded with history and cool trivia.

One of the youngest states, #47 as of 1912, it has a history that has been documented way, WAY back with evidence of human activity 10,000 years ago.

El Paso is the tip of Texas that pokes into New Mexico, leaving us surrounded by the 505 on 3 sides ... west, north and north/northeast. The southern border is the international boundary with Mexico so, El Chuco is really more bonded with NM than Texas.

We know lots of, not so well known, stuff about the land of enchantment ... here are 5 odd, fun facts:

Most of New Mexico Doesn't Belong To Anyone.

It's true. Over 2/3 of the state doesn't belong to private land holders. Most is owned or controlled by the United States government. Uncle Sam has 31.7% of the land and the BLM has 54.7% for a total of 86.4%.

One City Is, Literally, High.

This has nothing to do with the 505's legal marijuana industry, it has to do with literal elevation. At 5,314 feet above sea level, Albuquerque is the highest metropolitan city in the USA.

The Largest Lake In New Mexico Is Barely In New Mexico.

The largest lake in the state, Elephant Butte, is only 123 miles from the Texas - New Mexico state line.

The Largest Marijuana Sales Are (Also) Barely In New Mexico.

Sunland Park is a tiny town, sitting only 1 mile from the state line. Despite their small size, they recently ranked 5th in NM's overall pot sales. Why? It's still illegal in Texas so all the stoners from El Paso, Anthony and Canutillo go there. They owe it all to Texas.
