The website Safewise just released their tenth annual safest cities report by using FBI crime statistics data to rank cities in New Mexico; although they say that New Mexico had a "higher-than-average crime rates across the board", 24 cities managed to come through as some of the safest in the state.

According to Safewise, with the highest violent crime rate in the country and the third-highest property crime rate, New Mexico's violent crime rate is 9.0 incidents per 1,000 people, but the safest cities reported only 2.3 per 1,000.

The "safest" cities rankings are intended to highlight cities with low crime rates and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer.

What are the top five safest cities in New Mexico?

Starting from five to one, the top five safest cities in New Mexico are:

  • Sunland Park
  • Grants
  • Anthony
  • Corrales
  • Los Alamos

Anthony and Sunland Park are El Paso's neighbors, and many believe that because El Paso is considered one of the safest cities in the country- that would also extend to some of our nearby communities like Sunland Park and Anthony.

At least, that's what many in this Reddit thread believe. One Redditor commented:

Considering El Paso is the safest large city in the US, it isn't surprising that its New Mexico suburbs are safe.

Although there is one thing that someone said is not safe in the land of enchantment:
