If you’re into wildlife spotting, New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns National Park should definitely be on your radar. The park just landed a top spot on a list of the best places in the U.S. to see wildlife, and it’s easy to see why.

The National Park is part of the Chihuahuan Desert, where visitors can spot all kinds of wildlife, from Mexican free-tailed bats to desert reptiles, birds, and even mule deer. But the crown jewel is, of course, the Cavern, a huge show cave with towering chambers and jaw-dropping formations.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park One of the Best National Parks for Spotting Wildlife

Carlsbad Caverns National Park ranked as No. 4 in the U.S. for national parks for wildlife watching according to a new study by KÜHL, an outdoor apparel brand. KÜHL analyzed eight major wildlife categories- mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and more- factoring in both species diversity and visitor interest. Data revealed that Carlsbad Caverns National Park is among the top parks that are a must-visit for wild animals lovers.

Birdwatchers will love the that there are 362 recorded species, including cave swallows, great horned owls, and ladder-backed woodpeckers—the second-smallest woodpecker species in North America. Birdwatchers can spot these species soaring over the desert landscape or nesting near cave entrances.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park ranked fifth overall for reptile spotting, with 43 species thriving in the Chihuahuan Desert terrain. Mammal enthusiasts will find plenty to see as well- the park ranks seventh for mammals watching, with 68 recorded species.

Among the most fascinating are the Chihuahuan Desert pocket mouse, Rocky Mountain elk, and the park’s most famous residents- the Brazilian free-tailed bats. Every evening, thousands of these bats emerge in a breathtaking spiral from the cavern entrances, making for one of the most mesmerizing wildlife spectacles in the country.

Wildlife lovers will find something to love at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and it doesn't hurt that it's not too far from residents in El Paso, Texas.
