Local Politician Has Been Imprisoned for 2 ½ Weeks

Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin has remained in prison since he was arrested in Washington D.C. on January 17th. According to the Alamogordo Daily News, Griffin has been held without bail since he was arrested for his part in the failed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6th.

Couy Griffin’s history of making hateful statements that should disqualify him from holding ANY elected office is well documented.

There was the time Couy said, “The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat”…during a “church” service.

The time he said black NFL players should “go back to Africa”.

Then, he went to Washington to join in on the world’s dumbest attempted coup d’état.

The judge in the case denied bail because of his “past actions” and “troubling statements”. “Troubling actions and statements” seem to be Couy Griffin’s personal brand. Vowing that the “halls of the Capitol will run red with blood” probably figured into the judge’s decision.

Griffin was arrested for being on “restricted buildings or grounds without lawful authority”. So, kind of like “trespassing” but, in this case, “with the intention of overthrowing the U.S. government with threat of violence”.

As to whether Couy was an “active participant” or, as some have tried to spin it, he “just got caught up in the crowd and the confusion” Judge Zia M. Faruqui made a pretty astute observation: “When you are part of a mob and you get on a bullhorn, it’s hard to say you are not part of what is going on.”

Now, Otero County is short one of their three County Commissioners. But, according to folks in Alamogordo, it may not be much of a loss seeing as how Couy has been “neglecting his job” by going around the country, playing dress-up and trying to end American democracy.
