This Austin Chili’s Is a Surprisingly Beloved Texas Icon
Who doesn't love Chili's?
You've got the Triple Dipper. The baby back ribs. Those chips and salsa that somehow disappear from the table almost immediately! You pretty much know what you're getting when you walk into any Chili's in America.
But apparently, in Austin, only ONE Chili's can rule them all.
I'm talking about the Chili's at 45th and Lamar.
As someone from El Paso who has never actually been to Austin, I recently learned that this particular Chili's is kind of a big deal. And when I say big deal, I don't just mean people really like their local Chili's, this place is an Austin legend.
Naturally, my first reaction was: It's a Chili's. What am I missing here?
Austin Really Loves the Chili's at 45th and Lamar
Here's the thing: From what I can tell, there isn't some secret magical ingredient that makes this Chili's dramatically different from every other Chili's.
That's kind of the point.
The love for the 45th and Lamar location grew into a long-running Austin internet joke, with people recommending it as THE place to go for those famous "frosty margs" and skillet queso".
But somewhere along the way, everyone committed to the bit so hard that the love became very, very real.
The restaurant has been celebrated online for years, inspired a song from an Austin punk band and has become such a recognizable piece of local culture that Austin Monthly's guide to Austin slang simply refers to the location as "The Chili's." It even has its own Wikipedia page!
Austin Gave a Chili's Its Own Day
This is the point where I realized Austin was fully committed.
In 2024, Mayor Kirk Watson officially proclaimed April 5 as Chili's at 45th & Lamar Day.
Yes. A Chili's has its own day!
In the proclamation, Watson said the restaurant's grassroots popularity represents the special kind of weirdness that makes Austin, well, Austin.
And you know what? I can't argue with that. What started as a tongue-in-cheek obsession with an otherwise normal chain restaurant has somehow turned this particular Chili's into a genuine local icon.
That's actually kind of beautiful.
Maybe Austin Is Onto Something Here
Do I completely understand why the Chili's at 45th and Lamar became legendary Maybe I don't have to.
There's something charming about an entire city collectively deciding that THIS is their Chili's and then refusing to let the joke die.
El Paso has plenty of restaurants we're fiercely loyal to, but now I'm wondering why we don't have one completely ordinary Chili's that we've elevated to legendary status.
Maybe we've been doing this wrong.
Until then, I'll give Austin credit. Taking a regular Chili's and turning it into a beloved local landmark might be one of the best examples I've ever seen of keeping Austin weird.
And if I ever finally make my first trip to Austin, I guess I know where I'm getting my skillet queso.
