Sign, sealed, and delivered IT’S YOURS NEW MEXICO!

This past Tuesday, NM Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham made a visit to Las Cruces and during her visit, she made sure to sign a Senate Bill into law that was first introduced last month.

The bill in question? Senate Bill 188 which would officially designate ‘roasting chiles’ as the official aroma for the state of New Mexico.

The bill was first introduced by New Mexico state Sen. Bill Soules. (No pun intended)

For New Mexico residents, Chile is legit a way of life! It’s something added to almost every meal and at times the simple question of “Red or Green?” can start a huge debate, but something all New Mexican residents can agree on is that the smell of roasting Chile will always remind them of home.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 188 into law in front of an audience of young students at Monte Vista Elementary School.

Now, why in the world does having ‘roasting chiles’ as the state aroma even matter?!
Well, for many reasons but one main reason is to boost tourism in New Mexico.

Officially recognizing “roasted chile” as the state's aroma means marketers can use it to their advantage and market the heck out of it!

Fun marketing could lead to more curious visitors making a trip to New Mexico and it can also lead to more businesses wanting to open up in New Mexico.

Now, if only El Paso could jump on this trend and make our official city scent the smell of desert rain!
