Texas is 'sorta both, coming in at #28.

The Cato Institute, (using this method), ranked all 50 states to see who's freest,  economically and personally. Texas is pretty free economically but, one of the least free personally.

WTF does that mean? According to freedominthe50staes.org, economically:

Texas’s fiscal policy is very good. It is a fiscally decentralized state, with local taxes at about 4.5 percent of personal income, above the national average, and state taxes at about 3.6 percent of income, well below the national average.

Whoo Hoo, our wallets rock! Personally though, in Texas;

  • Criminal justice policies are generally aggressive
  • The incarceration rate is far above the national average.
  • Drug arrest rates are above average.
  • Asset forfeiture is mostly unreformed
  • Law enforcement frequently participates in equitable sharing. (of said assets)
  • Cannabis laws are harsh.
  • Travel freedom is low. (Texas takes a fingerprint for driver’s licenses and does not regulate automated license plate readers at all.)
  • Offers little legal gambling.
  • Private school choice programs are nonexistent.
  • Smoking and drinking are regulated.
