In the Race for Worst Drivers, Texas Crosses Finish Line First
Everything is bigger in Texas... including the number of bad drivers. Unfortunately, the number of deadly car crashes is on the rise. As of 2023, a fatal car crash occurs about every 15 minutes in the United States.
According to a study from Forbes Advisor, Texas was ranked to have the worst drivers in the country. Hands down.
Receiving a perfectly horrible score of 100 out of 100, the Lone Star State has a whopping 17.24 fatal car crashes involving drunk drivers per 100,000 licensed drivers. Texas was the second worst for fatal crashes involving a drowsy driver and for those involving wrong-way drivers.
Coming in behind Texas in second place is one of its neighbors, Louisiana. Louisiana also makes the top 5 in fatal crashes involving distracted drivers (3.74 accidents per 100,000 licensed drivers). The other neighbor to Texas, New Mexico, is the state with the highest number of distracted driver accidents.
Before getting to the full list... let's talk about which states have the best drivers. Straddling the top spots are Washington D.C. and Vermont. Seven of the top 10 states with the best drivers are in the East Coast area, including Washington, D.C., Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island.
New York, huh? Interesting.
