Have You Been To This Hidden El Paso Restaurant?

El Paso is loaded with hidden gems and "best-kept secrets". Regarding food, one of our best, somewhat hidden, spots just celebrated its 1st anniversary.

The restaurant itself is far from "new", having operated since the early '80s. One year ago, on July 3rd, ownership was taken over by one of El Paso's best and most well-known DJs... Pedro Aveytia, aka DJ Primo ... and his wife Tere.

The Shelby Shack sits in a very unique place, well off the beaten path and known to a select group of regulars and "friends of friends". It's INSIDE a local car dealership.

Casa Ford, 5815 Montana, is an iconic El Paso Ford dealership that has been in business since 1969 and operated by the Lowenfield family the entire time. Inside the dealership's service area sits the Shelby Shack.

Unless you're a Casa customer or you have otherwise been told about the Shelby Shack, you'd never find or know about it. That's why I said it was known only to a "select" group.

The Shelby Shack is modeled after a 1950's 1950s-era diner and is open Mon-Fri from 7 am-3 pm and Saturday from 7 am-1 pm. Not only is the food delicious and reasonably priced, the shack itself is practically a museum.

The walls are adorned with all kinds of memorabilia including an Oscar De La Hoya boxing glove, Tim Hardaway's autograph, and photos of the legendary, 1966 UTEP NCAA champs.

Don Haskins was a regular which accounts for all the amazing UTEP memorabilia which includes professional and candid photos of "the Bear" and some of his favorite shirts, presented to the Shelby Shack by his wife.
